How does the mentorship process work?
- Mentors’ bios will be published on the website.
- Mentees select their preferred mentors and answer contextual questions.
- Allocation depends on mentor availability.
- Mentors may accept or reject mentee requests; unallocated mentees get assigned to other mentors.
- CollegeLAH introduces mentors and mentees via email.
- Mentors update CollegeLAH on progress with their mentees and inform when the mentorship is finished.
How long is the mentorship with one student, and when does the mentorship finish?
- Mentorship ends when the mentee submits their UCAS personal statement or when the mentee no longer needs mentorship.
- Mentorship length depends on the mentee’s request date and internal deadline.
How much time do I have to spend with a mentee?
- At bare minimum, as long as it takes to provide a quality review of the mentee’s personal statement. If it is previously indicated and agreed upon by the mentor and mentee for other mentorship services to be provided, adequate contact time is expected.
- Keep in mind that a CollegeLAH mentor should be willing to provide as much mentorship as possible, to a reasonable extent.
I may be busy during certain months and free during the other months between August – January.
- Mentors can accept or reject mentees based on their availability and should communicate their schedule to mentees.
Will I get a certification of appreciation after finishing a term?
- Mentors who mentor at least 1 student may receive a certificate upon request.
What kind of training or resources will be provided to mentors to enhance their mentoring skills?
- CollegeLAH’s UK University Application Directors will conduct training sessions for mentors.
Can mentors choose the areas or subjects they feel most comfortable mentoring in?
- Yes, mentors can select areas they feel comfortable mentoring in.
How will confidentiality and privacy be maintained for both mentors and mentees?
- Mentees’ personal statements are confidential and only shared with selected mentors.
- Mentors’ personal contact details are only shared to assigned mentees, which has been accepted by the mentor.
Will there be any opportunity for mentors to receive feedback or evaluations on their performance as mentors?
- Mentors can access feedback given by mentees to the CollegeLAH team if the mentee has indicated that they agree to this access
What kind of support will be available if a mentor encounters a difficult situation or is unsure how to help a mentee with their personal statement?
- There is a mentor group chat for support and communication.
- You may reach out to CollegeLAH Directors for advice.
Can mentors provide feedback on multiple drafts of a mentee’s personal statement, or is there a limit to the number of revisions?
- Mentors can provide feedback on multiple drafts until both parties are satisfied.
Are there any specific qualifications or experience requirements to become a mentor for the program?
- Yes, you must be a UK University student in 2023/2024 with a passion for helping others access higher education to become a mentor.
- Professional/fluent proficiency in English is preferred.
Will mentors have the opportunity to connect with other mentors for networking or peer support?
- Yes, through the mentor group chat.
How will the program handle mentorship if a mentor experiences unforeseen personal commitments or challenges during the program’s duration?
- Mentors are required to inform CollegeLAH Directors immediately.
How will the program handle any potential issues or conflicts that may arise between mentors and mentees?
- CollegeLAH Directors will act as impartial mediators, and mentors have the right to stop providing mentorship in extreme cases.
Will mentors have access to any resources or tools to aid in personal statement refinement, such as writing guides or style manuals?
- Yes, the training session and mentor group chat offer guidance and advice.
Will mentors have the flexibility to choose the communication platform (e.g., email, video calls) that works best for them and their mentees?
- Yes, mentors and mentees can choose the communication platforms that suit them best.
- However, the first communication must be done through email
Can mentors participate in the program remotely, or is physical presence required for any activities?
- The mentorship program is fully virtual.
